Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is widely used to treat early gastric cancer (EGC) in patients in Asia who have a low risk for lymph node metastases. However, studies of long-term clinical outcomes are lacking. Now, investigators in Korea have compared outcomes of death and tumor recurrence in patients with EGC treated with EMR or surgery.
Among consecutive patients treated for EGC at a single center during a 5-year period, researchers analyzed data on 172 patients who underwent EMR and 379 who underwent surgery. Outcome data were gathered retrospectively from records of follow-up evaluations, recommended at 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, and annually thereafter, as well as from telephone interviews with patients if feasible.
