Magnetic endoscopic imaging (MEI) produces a three-dimensional image of the colonoscope on a computer screen to facilitate identification and removal of loops and bends in the instrument during colonoscopy. Previous studies by its developers showed that the greatest benefit of MEI was for trainees, with no benefit for experienced endoscopists.
To investigate the potential for MEI to reduce severe pain during colonoscopy, researchers in Norway randomized 810 consecutive unsedated patients to receive either MEI or standard colonoscopy with on-demand fluoroscopy.
