Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and venous thromboembolism (including pulmonary embolism) are associated with major surgeries and prolonged inactivity. Although the risk for thrombosis is lower in noninvasive surgery, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) often involves a prolonged procedure and period of bed rest during which the patient must remain in one position, which could increase the risk for DVT.
To evaluate the incidence of DVT in patients undergoing ESD for gastric neoplasm, investigators performed lower-extremity ultrasound in 60 patients (mean age, 71) on the day after surgery and measured serum levels of D-dimer on the day before the procedure, immediately after the procedure, and on the following day.
