A single-topic forum sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) recently discussed strategies to improve effectiveness of screening and treatment of chronic viral hepatitis infection. The conference was held in response to the recent Institute of Medicine consensus report indicating that the lack of knowledge and awareness of chronic hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) infections by the public and medical providers are barriers to ongoing efforts to prevent and control these chronic infections.
