Colorectal cancer screening is an effective tool for preventing cancer, but only if patients participate. To review participation rates, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 100 prospective studies of colorectal cancer screening in unselected populations receiving a first-time invitation for screening. Only four studies included screening with colonoscopy and three included screening with computed tomography (CT) colonography.
Overall participation rates were 47% for fecal occult blood test (FOBT), 42% for fecal immunochemical test (FIT), 41% for sigmoidoscopy combined with FOBT or FIT, 35% for sigmoidoscopy, 28% for colonoscopy, and 22% for CT colonography.
