Consensus guidelines for the diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) require that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) be excluded by a lack of clinical and histological response to acid suppression therapy or by negative results of pH monitoring. However, the overlap between these two diseases is increasingly recognized, making specific diagnosis and treatment a challenge.
