Ischemic colitis is a common clinical condition and should prompt clinicians to obtain a history for cocaine use, which is one cause. Now, researchers have examined possible differences in clinical presentation and outcomes of cocaine-related ischemic colitis versus non–cocaine-related ischemic colitis in an urban population.
In a hybrid cohort/case-control study, investigators retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 97 patients from two tertiary care centers who had a confirmed diagnosis of bowel ischemia. The 19 patients who reported cocaine use or had positive urine tests for cocaine within 6 months of hospital admission were categorized as cases, and the other 78 patients with ischemic colitis were categorized as controls.
