Placement of a hood or cap on the tip of an endoscope is a simple approach proposed to improve adenoma detection rates. However, study results are inconsistent with regard to its efficacy. Now, researchers have conducted a meta-analysis of 16 randomized, controlled trials (total, 8991 participants) to compare polyp detection and cecal intubation rates between cap-assisted and standard colonoscopy.
A slightly higher proportion of patients with polyps was detected using cap-assisted colonoscopy than using standard colonoscopy (relative risk, 1.08; 95% confidence interval, 1.00–1.17).
