Oral budesonide is known to be effective in inducing and maintaining remission in mild to moderate Crohn ileitis but not in ulcerative colitis (UC), as budesonide is not effectively delivered to the colon. Budesonide Multi Matrix System (MMX) is designed to extend the release of budesonide throughout the colon.
To test the efficacy of budesonide MMX in inducing remission in patients with mild to moderate UC, investigators randomized 489 patients to receive daily doses of budesonide MMX (9 mg), budesonide MMX (6 mg), mesalamine (2.4 g), or placebo for 8 weeks in an industry-funded, double-blinded trial.
