Low-dose aspirin (ASA) and Helicobacter pylori infection can cause peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB) by different mechanisms. But is the incidence of PUB in ASA users affected by presence of H. pylori?
To find out, investigators in Hong Kong prospectively followed three cohorts of ASA users every 3 to 6 months for up to 10 years:
249 patients with healed peptic ulcers and eradicated H. pylori infection (HP eradicated)
118 patients with healed peptic ulcers and no history of H. pylori infection (HP negative)
537 patients with no history of PUB or H. pylori infection (average risk)
