A sequential approach to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening — offering one type of test followed by another type for nonresponders — is recommended by some gastroenterological societies (e.g., American College of Gastroenterology) but has not been tested in randomized, controlled trials. In the current population-based cohort study, researchers examined the effectiveness of this approach with flexible sigmoidoscopy and fecal immunochemical testing (FIT).
Of 63,718 people invited to undergo flexible sigmoidoscopy in two cities in Italy, the response rate was 30.3%. Of eligible nonresponders who were subsequently invited to be screened with FIT, 19.3% took the test. Flexible sigmoidoscopy screening led to detection of CRC in 59 men and 27 women…
