The multiple mechanisms underlying the development of painful and nonpainful neuropathy associated with diabetes mellitus are not fully elucidated. Between 16% and 26% of diabetes patients experience chronic neuropathic pain, making diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) the most common neuropathic pain disorder.
