In this community-based, longitudinal study, researchers assessed outcomes and predictors of chronic daily headache (CDH) in 122 Taiwanese middle-school students (32 boys and 90 girls, of almost 8000 students initially surveyed). The 122 children with CDH completed 1-year and 2-year follow-up surveys. CDH was defined as 15 or more headache days per month, for at least 2 hours per day, for more than 3 months. The researchers conducted follow-up telephone surveys 1 and 2 years after baseline.
In the 2-year survey, CDH was more common in females (32%) than in males (4%). CDH persisted in 40% of the 122 students after 1 year and in 25% after 2 years. Persistence of CDH was independently predicted by both major depression and medication overuse.
