These researchers examined the association between serum estradiol level and subsequent stroke risk in a prospective cohort study of 2197 men (age range, 71–93) who participated in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study. All participants were free of stroke, coronary heart disease, and cancer at the start of follow-up (1991–1993). The authors measured serum estradiol levels at baseline and categorized the levels in quintiles. They used detailed medical record review to ascertain incident stroke cases.
