The International Headache Society (IHS) defines medication overuse headache (MOH) as headache that occurs on more than 14 days each month for at least 3 months, with use of analgesics or acute-migraine drugs for more than 10 or 15 days each month, depending on the drug involved. Traditionally, MOH is treated by stopping all medication for a period of weeks to return patients to their initial headache frequencies (before medication overuse).
The authors of this study systematically tested the drug-withdrawal approach, with and without short-term prednisolone treatment, to treat IHS-defined MOH.
