Transverse myelitis encompasses a broad group of illnesses with separate etiologies and clinical behaviors, which have been identified as distinct disease entities only in recent years. In 2002, the Transverse Myelitis Consortium Working Group published strict criteria to define idiopathic transverse myelitis. In this article, Thomas Scott proposes using alternative criteria that incorporate clinical severity and symmetry, to better predict the likelihood of further relapses.
