The relation between body weight and dementia is complex. Some studies have found that weight loss precedes dementia onset, whereas others show that obesity is a risk factor. To further explore this issue, researchers compared the weights of patients with dementia to those of controls in the years preceding dementia onset.
The researchers determined incident cases of vascular and neurodegenerative dementia between 1990 and 1994 by reviewing records from the Rochester Epidemiology Project and matched cases by age and sex with controls who were dementia-free as of the index year (year of dementia onset in cases). Weight information was extracted from the records for time intervals of as long as 30 years before the index year.
