The basis for vascular cognitive impairment remains controversial. In this study, researchers assessed 40 nondemented patients 1 month after lacunar stroke. Based on the results of neuropsychological testing, they divided subjects into two groups: those with mild executive and memory dysfunction, indicating mild cognitive impairment of the vascular type; and those without significant cognitive impairment. Two neuroradiologists assessed the location and severity of MRI hyperintensities in subcortical gray and white matter. Voxel-based computerized morphometry combined with statistical parametric mapping was used to identify regions with significant gray-matter atrophy.
