Although neurologists have described the cognitive deficits in stroke syndromes by using clinicopathologic and clinicoradiologic correlations, little is known about impairments soon after stroke. To evaluate early cognitive deficits after stroke, these researchers performed neuropsychologic evaluations within 3 weeks of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke in 168 patients and in 75 healthy controls. The evaluations comprised 15 tests covering the following cognitive domains: abstract reasoning, verbal memory, executive functioning, visual perception and construction, visual memory, language, and neglect.
