These authors asked whether risk-factor control influences occurrence of subsequent vascular events in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis. They performed a post hoc analysis of data from the WASID study, a randomized trial of warfarin versus aspirin in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis (50%–99% stenosis, with stroke or TIA). Although the etiology of intracranial stenosis is not always clear, it is presumably of atherosclerotic origin in most patients. The authors looked at various established risk factors for stroke and vascular disease, including hypertension, diabetes, lipid levels, smoking, and alcohol use.
