The functional anatomy that underlies the creativity of a Salvador Dali or an Andy Warhol painting has remained a neurologic mystery. Seeley and colleagues present the case of Anne Adams, who experienced a gain in creative function in the setting of a nonfluent progressive aphasia.
A lifelong scientist, Adams developed a late affinity for painting some 10 years before the diagnosis of her illness. Her creative peak, 6 years before her aphasia diagnosis, is represented by her painting “Unravelling Boléro,” which transforms the components of Ravel’s classical musical masterpiece into a visual representation.
