Is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) a risk factor for seizures? These authors examined the frequency of OSA in patients with seizures in a cross-sectional study. Of 290 patients who presented with seizures, they analyzed 21, after excluding those with unreliable information, medical instability, nonepileptic seizures, and prior diagnosis of OSA. Patients were divided into two groups: Group one comprised 11 patients (82% men) with stable or improving seizures at or after age 50, and group two comprised 10 patients (80% women) with either new-onset or worsening seizures. Patients in group one were taking significantly more medications than group-two patients.
