Pregnancy is a recognized risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), yet reports of pregnancy-related CTS incidence and prognosis vary, and no long-term follow-up of CTS after delivery has been reported. These investigators prospectively compared incidence and 3-year prognosis in pregnancy-related CTS and idiopathic CTS.
Of 259 women seen at one gynecology practice, 72 women reported hand symptoms during pregnancy. Of the 72, 69 underwent standard electrodiagnostic tests, including motor latencies and sensory conduction velocities of the median nerve, and short-segment studies when the other tests were negative.
