These authors provide a comprehensive review of the neurologic complications of chronic hepatitis C virus infection, which afflicts 130 million people worldwide. Although the most common clinical expression of chronic hepatitis C is liver disease, extrahepatic manifestations occur in an estimated 40% to 74% of infected patients and are sometimes dominant and even debilitating or fatal. Some patients with chronic hepatitis C infection are first diagnosed with the disease when they present with an extrahepatic manifestation. Neurologic manifestations, such as peripheral neuropathy, stroke, and transverse myelopathy, can occur in some patients with chronic hepatitis C infection.
