Some two dozen epidemiologic studies have investigated whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) prevent development of Alzheimer disease (AD). Although almost all of these reports have suggested a protective effect (Neurobiol Aging 2007; 28:639), critics have noted small sample sizes, questionable accuracy of medication history, and other issues. Now, researchers have presented data on 49,349 case patients with incident AD and 196,850 matched controls without dementia, taken from the records of the U.S. Veterans Affairs healthcare system. The records included complete and detailed histories of NSAID use.
