Celiac disease is a chronic condition in which immune-mediated inflammation is triggered by gluten in the diet. Tests for the disease include small-bowel biopsy and serum tests for autoantibodies, including endomysial antibody (IgA EMA), tissue transglutaminase antibody (IgA tTG), and antigliadin antibody (AGA). This review of potential neurologic complications of celiac disease focuses on three reported neurologic complications: ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, and epilepsy. The author provides an evidence-based assessment of reports supporting and refuting each of the proposed complications.
