Trigeminal trophic syndrome (TTS) is a rare triad of unilateral facial pain, paresthesias, and ulceration that is associated with injury to the trigeminal nuclei and its peripheral, but not central, projections. These researchers retrospectively identified 14 cases of TTS at one center — the largest series ever identified.
Onset occurred days to years after trigeminal injury. Women outnumbered men 6:1; mean age was 45. Eight cases had a known iatrogenic source (e.g., left Gasserian ganglionectomy); one had an unknown iatrogenic source (because of multiple procedures); two resulted from primary neurologic-injury; and three may have had both iatrogenic and primary causes.
