These authors retrospectively investigated the association between recanalization success after intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) treatment and risk for symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH). Subjects were 349 patients with large-artery stroke treated with tPA within 3 hours of onset; average pretreatment National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stroke Scale score was 16. Recanalization was assessed by transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound 2 hours after treatment initiation.
The risk for sICH within 72 hours after treatment was significantly higher in patients with no arterial recanalization (13%) than in those with either partial (4%) or complete (3.5%) recanalization. This association remained after adjustments for typical IC…
