Hemicrania continua (HC) is a rare disorder characterized by unilaterality, continuous headache, and absolute response to indomethacin. Local autonomic phenomena are common during exacerbations.
In this manufacturer-sponsored study, investigators tested the effectiveness of a bion (miniature neurostimulator) implanted over the greater occipital nerve on the symptomatic side in six patients with HC. The study had an intraindividual crossover design in which the bion was switched on for 4 months, then off for 1 month, then on again. At final follow-up, patients estimated their mean pain severities since the 5-month follow-up and for the preimplant period. Four reported improvement; two reported only minor changes.
