Combining a first-line multiple sclerosis (MS) agent with an adjunctive agent would be an attractive option for patients with MS who have disease activity despite standard treatment. Studies in animal models of MS have found that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) reduce inflammation, making statins an attractive potential adjunctive MS therapy. In this double-blind trial, investigators evaluated the safety of adding atorvastatin to interferon-β therapy. They randomized 26 patients with clinically stable relapsing-remitting MS to receive placebo, 40 mg of atorvastatin, or 80 mg of atorvastatin daily for 6 months. The patients continued their pretrial interferon-β therapy (44 µg subcutaneously, thrice weekly).
