In this comprehensive review, Grisold and colleagues discuss the evidence published since 1975 on incidence, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cerebrovascular disorders in cancer, including brain infarction, hemorrhage, and cerebral venous thrombosis.
Strokes typically occur late in the clinical course of cancer. Although some stroke risk factors in cancer patients may overlap with those in the general population, the evidence regarding risk factor prevalence is inconclusive. Stroke outcome is worse in cancer patients. The authors reviewed several mechanisms that may explain this finding, including coagulation disorders, invasion or compression of vessels from tumors, and adverse effects of cancer therapy.
