Many patients who have atrial fibrillation or have undergone valve replacement take warfarin to prevent ischemic stroke and are at risk for hemorrhage. The presence of cerebral microbleeds increases the risk for lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with certain conditions, such as cerebral amyloid angiopathy, but the impact of microbleeds on warfarin-related hemorrhage is less well understood. To study the association, investigators looked for microbleeds on MRI scans in 24 patients with ICH after warfarin use (cases) and in 48 warfarin users without ICH (controls). The investigators also assessed clinical variables, vascular risk factors, and presence of white matter hyperintensities (WMH).
