Associations between cognitive tasks and driving behaviors have been known for years. But which clinical measures of cognition relate to dangerous driving errors in people with Alzheimer disease (AD), and how well do the measures predict driving errors? To address these questions, researchers evaluated 40 licensed drivers with probable early AD and 115 elders without known neurological disease (controls). Participants completed an extensive battery of cognitive tests as well as vision and motor tests and drove in an instrumented vehicle on a standardized, public route. Experts analyzed videotapes of the driving behaviors for specific errors.
