With this study, a strong multidisciplinary team attempted to address methodologic problems in previous studies examining the effectiveness of rehabilitation in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). They randomized eligible patients with stable MS treated at one tertiary care center to undergo either immediate outpatient rehabilitation therapy (treatment group) or delayed therapy (control group; untreated for this analysis). Of 204 patients invited, 98 (48 treatment; 50 control) participated. Assessments, done in the patients’ homes by blinded raters, included several rating scales. The primary outcome was 1-year change from baseline in score on the functional independence measure (FIM).
