The use of telecommunications technology in the care of patients with stroke (telestroke) has grown greatly over the last decade; many active networks are now in operation in North America and Europe. In these new scientific and policy statements from the American Stroke Association (ASA), experts review the evidence on the use of telestroke to enhance stroke systems of care. The authors give evidence-based recommendations for the implementation and maintenance of hub-and-spoke telestroke systems, wherein a center with expertise in stroke care (the hub) provides telestroke services to underserved centers (the spokes). The authors also provide troubleshooting advice based on the experiences of several existing systems.
