Diabetes is accompanied by a range of symptoms, including pain. Up to 25% of patients with diabetes experience pain substantial enough to affect their sleep and lower their quality of life (Diabetes Care 2006; 29:1518). Available medications used to treat pain in these patients either do not work well or produce adverse effects that limit their use.
