After gabapentin received FDA approval in 1993 for adjunctive treatment of partial seizures, the drug was widely used off-label for other neuropsychiatric problems. In 2004, Pfizer subsidiary Warner-Lambert paid a $430 million settlement to resolve legal charges of inappropriate promotion of the drug for unapproved uses (see U.S. Department of Justice press release). These documents contain planning and outcome data from 21 company-sponsored studies of the drug in treating migraine, bipolar disorder, nociceptive pain, or neuropathic pain.
