To determine whether disparities in epilepsy care exist in Sweden, researchers conducted a nationwide, cross-sectional, retrospective review of antiepileptic drug (AED) prescriptions to adults with epilepsy. The authors evaluated whether sociodemographic variables (age, sex, area of residence, educational level, income) are associated with treatment by neurologists versus non-neurologists and with AED choice.
From various national registries, the authors identified 26,124 epilepsy patients (after excluding 12.7% of all registered epilepsy patients because of missing data) and obtained group-level data on prescribed and dispensed AEDs, education levels attained, and income levels.
