Among children, seizures occur most frequently before 24 months of age. This prospective study describes the clinical characteristics and neuroimaging findings of infants (age range, 1–24 months) with first afebrile seizures.
Of 1118 children with first afebrile seizures seen at one center between the years 2001 and 2007, 317 were aged 1 to 24 months. Computed tomography (CT) scans were performed in 94.0%, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in 57.4%, and electroencephalography (EEG) in 90.2%. Nearly half of the infants had partial seizures and abnormal EEG findings; many had recurrent seizures including infantile spasms. CT scans were abnormal in 35.2%.
