The association between sleep and epilepsy is well studied and described in adults, but the relationship in neonates is less well understood. These authors reviewed the literature on this association in neonates.
The review includes a short outline of normal sleep organization in the neonatal period, a larger section on neonatal seizures, and a brief discussion of the overlap. The section on epilepsy includes Volpe's neonatal seizure classification, electroclinical dissociation of seizures, and long-term prognosis.
