Data from experimental studies have shown that the transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 1 (TRPV1) receptor plays a role in the pathophysiology of peripheral pain syndromes. Based on these results and on anatomical data demonstrating the presence of the TRPV1 receptor in most migraine-relevant structures of the peripheral and central nervous system, some have suggested that the TRPV1 receptor might have a functional role in migraine.
