Since a meta-analysis of studies of mechanical thrombectomy was published in 2008 (Arch Neurol 2008; 65:1024), clinical experience with this procedure has grown. In a new meta-analysis, researchers identified 87 published studies of mechanical thrombectomy devices for treating patients with acute ischemic stroke: 18 prospective cohort studies (3 with blinded assessment of outcomes), 7 noncomparative retrospective studies, and 62 case series or reports.
Of the 1438 patients in these studies, 847 were treated with clot retrievers (primarily the Merci Retriever), 411 with aspiration/suction devices (primarily the Penumbra System), and 180 with other device types. In the studies of the two most commonly used devices, recanalization occurred in 4…
