To examine whether the rate of hospitalization for acute stroke among the young is changing, researchers conducted electronic searches of ICD-9 codes in 1995–2008 discharge data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. The researchers identified hospitalizations for ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke among people aged 5 to 45. Among the resulting patient group, the researchers searched secondary ICD-9 codes to identify comorbidities, from which they estimated the prevalence of risk factors among the patients identified. After dividing the identified patients into three age groups, the researchers assessed stroke and risk-factor trends over time.
