Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) that are symptomatic most frequently present with hemorrhages, seizures, or headaches. Much attention has been focused on whether AVM treatment reduces the subsequent stroke risk, but the effect of AVM therapy on prognosis for patients with seizures has been understudied.
Now, researchers have retrospectively assessed seizure outcomes in 161 patients who underwent radiosurgery for an AVM over a 10-year period and were followed for an average of 89.8 months. Of the 86 patients (53%) who had seizures before radiosurgery, 77% were seizure-free at the last clinical follow-up and 58% were medication-free.
