This report from the ongoing Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Childhood (FEBSTAT) study provides the first description of acute imaging findings from a large cohort of children who experienced febrile status epilepticus (FSE). Investigators assessed 191 children aged 1 month to 5 years (median age, 15.7 months) with FSE who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at five U.S. sites, most within 1 week after the seizure. Patients with histories of afebrile seizures or evidence of acute central nervous system infection or insult were excluded. Controls were 96 children aged 6 months to 5 years with a first simple febrile seizure; most underwent MRI within 1 week.
