Many neuroprotective agents with different mechanisms have shown promise in animal models of acute ischemic stroke but then failed in human clinical trials. These trials typically included patients with acute stroke treated within 6 to 12 hours after stroke onset. Now, researchers have conducted a manufacturer-funded phase II study to test the safety of a novel neuroprotective agent (NA-1) and to provide preliminary evidence regarding its effect on iatrogenic strokes. They randomized 197 patients to received NA-1 or saline infusion while patients remained under anesthesia after endovascular repair of ruptured or unruptured aneurysms.
