Two phase III trials demonstrate efficacy in reducing disease activity in the relapsing form of MS.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF; BG-12) is an oral compound that, in combination with monoethylfumarate salts, has been licensed in Germany since 1994 as a systemic treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis (under the brand name Fumaderm). DMF is thought to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and cytoprotective properties. Now, researchers have tested the effect of DMF in patients with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in two manufacturer-funded, phase III trials.
