Increasing numbers of families seek out hyperbaric oxygen treatment for their children with cerebral palsy because of purported improvements in spasticity, cognition, memory, and attention. In this randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, investigators evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on motor function in children with cerebral palsy.
The researchers randomized 49 children aged 3 to 8 years with spastic cerebral palsy to treatment with either 100% oxygen or 14% oxygen (to simulate room air), pressurized to 1.5 atmospheres, during 40 treatments lasting 1 hour each, over an 8-week period.
