Results from open-label trials have suggested that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may help in treating patients with schizophrenia, and researchers in a double-blind pilot study have found that adding a principal constituent, eicosapentaenoic acid, to standard antipsychotic treatment is superior to add-on docohexaenoic acid (another constituent of fatty acids) and to placebo. However, other double-blind studies have yielded conflicting results.
