Intimate partner violence is of considerable concern to psychiatrists, other mental health professionals, primary care providers, and emergency health personnel. To study prevalence, patterns, and injury rates, investigators drew data from a longitudinal, population-based U.S. study of young adults (age range, 18–28). There were 11,370 individuals who reported on intimate partner violence and resulting injury in 18,761 “important” heterosexual relationships during the 5 previous years.
